A definition of new media scholarship

Cheryl Ball offers a taxonomy of scholarly publications that identifies three categories: online scholarship, scholarship about new media, and new media scholarship (403). She contends that most work published (at least through her article’s 2004 publication date) is merely scholarship about new media because it relies primarily on text as the main mode of argument. She contrasts this with true new media scholarship which uses other modes such as audio, video, imagery and animation (2004, 404).
