Key factors and supports
As a step toward dispelling these perceptions, in-class discussions should acknowledge three key factors that discourage engagement:
- Factor 1: Lack of knowledge and/or experience
- Factor 2: Lack of time to complete projects
- Factor 3: Fear of producing weak arguments and earning poor grades
Additionally, course syllabi and pedagogical planning should incorporate three key supportive practices that encourage graduate students to engage in new media composition:
- Support 1: Provide clear expectations and models of new media assignments
- Support 2: Provide training on new media composition in class and opportunities for play
- Support 3: Encourage risk taking and experimentation
