Analyzing the Interviews
To ensure an accurate record and to allow for the opportunity to digitally share each participant’s “voice,” each interview was videotaped. Graduate students and instructors were asked similar sets of questions based on their academic role. Each recording was watched at least two times after the initial interview. The first viewing was for review purposes only and entailed no note taking. The second viewing was used to transcribe key responses, capture general thoughts of the participant, and to record general observations in a two-column format.
Each “transcript” was then reviewed multiple times — once in conjunction with viewing the actual video recording to collect time codes for editing of video segments to be included in this pilot study report; once for review of content (which included no note-taking); and once to add my thoughts, connections to other participant responses, key terms and additional observations. Please note that it was not necessary to get a word-for-word transcription in those notes since I would be producing video segments for inclusion in this digital pilot study report that would convey exactly what was said in each clip (see sample). Analysis of these interviews revealed several key factors encouraging and dissuading the creation of new media scholarship by Old Dominion University graduate students.Selecting Student Participants • Selecting Instructor Participants • Analyzing the Interviews • Limitations (Interviews) • Home
